St. Mamas

died c. 275 · Caesarea, Cappadocia · Feast September 2

Mamas was born in prison to Christian parents who died for the faith. He grew up a shepherd in the mountains near Caesarea, living on the milk of wild animals and preaching to them. Under Aurelian he was arrested and tortured, and a lion defended him in the arena. He was killed with a trident at fifteen. In Cyprus, where many churches bear his name, he is shown riding a lion.
