St. Mercurius the Great Martyr
Mercurius was a young officer of Scythian origin. Before a battle against the barbarians an angel gave him a sword and promised him victory, and he won. When the emperor Decius ordered him to sacrifice to the gods in thanks, he confessed Christ and was beheaded at Caesarea. Tradition says that a century later he struck down Julian the Apostate in battle, in answer to the prayers of St. Basil.
