Porphyrius was a wealthy man from Thessaloniki who became a hermit in the Egyptian desert and then in the Jordan valley. He was made bishop of Gaza, still a pagan stronghold. Through his prayers rain fell in a drought and many were baptized. With the empress’s help the temple of Marnas was closed and a church built in its place. His church still stands in Gaza.
