Barsanuphius the Great Elder and his disciple John the Prophet lived as hermits at the monastery of Seridos near Gaza and met no one face to face. They answered questions from monks, bishops and lay people through a messenger, and more than eight hundred of their letters survive, full of humble and practical guidance. St. Dorotheos was their spiritual child.
