Sts. Boris and Gleb

died 1015 · Vyshhorod · Feast July 24

Boris and Gleb were young sons of St. Vladimir. When their father died in 1015, their elder brother Sviatopolk set out to kill his rivals. Boris’ soldiers urged him to fight, but he would not raise his hand against his brother, and he prayed through the night until the assassins came. Gleb was killed soon after. They were the first saints canonized in Rus’, honoured as passion-bearers who accepted death without resisting, after the example of Christ.
