Saint
St. Theodosius of the Kyiv Caves
Theodosius left a comfortable home in Kursk, against his mother’s fierce opposition, to join St. Anthony in the caves above the Dnieper. As abbot he brought the Studite rule from Constantinople and built a monastery above ground. He wore rough clothes, worked alongside the monks, fed the poor, and rebuked princes when they did wrong. He is the father of communal monasticism in Rus’.
