St. Ilya of Murom

12th century · Kyiv Caves Lavra · Feast December 19

Ilya Muromets is the greatest hero of the Russian epics, a peasant’s son who could not walk until thirty, then rose with great strength and defended Rus’. Behind the legend stands a real warrior who became a monk of the Kyiv Caves. His incorrupt relics rest there, and studies of them show a man of great height who suffered from spinal disease and died of wounds.
