St. Anthony of the Kyiv Caves
Anthony was born in Liubech near Chernihiv and became a monk on Mount Athos. His abbot sent him back to Rus’, where around 1051 he dug a cave in the hills above the Dnieper and lived there in prayer. Disciples came, among them St. Theodosius, and they dug more caves until a whole monastery grew there, the Kyiv Caves Lavra. Anthony is honoured as the father of monasticism in Rus’.
