The Book of Pastoral Rule
St. Gregory the Dialogist · image, public domain
Written when St. Gregory became pope of Rome in 590, and fearing the burden. It covers who should take up the care of souls, how the pastor should live, and, at length, how to counsel the proud and the timid, the rich and the poor, the sick and the well.
The emperor had it translated into Greek in St. Gregory's lifetime. The Orthodox Church honours him as the author of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
