Orthodox Prayers

The daily prayers of the Orthodox Church, in Greek and English side by side.

The Trisagion Prayers

These open almost every Orthodox prayer time, morning or evening, at home or in church. If you only learn one set of prayers by heart, learn these.

The Trisagion Prayers

Make the sign of the Cross and say:

Glory to you, our God, glory to you.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, present everywhere and filling all things, treasury of blessings and giver of life: come and dwell in us, cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.×3

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.

All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, be merciful to our sins. Master, forgive us our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal our weaknesses, for your name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy.×3

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

When praying on your own, without a priest, end with:

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Morning Prayers

Said on waking, before the day gets busy. Stand before your icons if you have them. A few minutes is enough.

On waking

Before anything else, say the prayer of the publican:

God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

Then the Trisagion Prayers, followed by:

Rising from sleep, we fall down before you, O Good One, and cry to you, O Mighty One, the hymn of the angels: Holy, holy, holy are you, O God. Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.

To end the morning prayers

#

Say the Creed (below), then this hymn to the Theotokos, and the dismissal:

It is truly right to call you blessed, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and all-blameless, and Mother of our God. More honoured than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify you.

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Evening Prayers

Said before sleep. Begin with the Trisagion Prayers, look back over the day, and ask forgiveness for what went wrong in it.

Prayer of St. Ioannikios

The Father is my hope, the Son is my refuge, the Holy Spirit is my shelter. Holy Trinity, glory to you.

Prayers at Meals

Orthodox Christians pray together before and after eating, and make the sign of the Cross over the food.

Before meals

Say the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father”), then:

Christ our God, bless the food and drink of your servants, for you are holy at all times, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.

After meals

We thank you, Christ our God, for you have filled us with your earthly gifts. Do not deprive us of your heavenly kingdom, but as you came among your disciples, O Saviour, and gave them peace, come to us also and save us. Amen.

Before and After Holy Communion

These are the heart of the preparation for Communion. The full preparation is longer, and your priest will tell you how to prepare, including confession and fasting.

Before Communion: “I believe, Lord”

Said by the faithful as they prepare to receive, and at the Liturgy before Communion:

I believe, Lord, and I confess that you are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly your most pure Body, and that this is truly your precious Blood. So I pray to you: have mercy on me and forgive my sins, those I meant and those I did not, in word and in deed, knowingly and unknowingly. And make me worthy to share in your most pure Mysteries without condemnation, for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. Amen.

Receive me today, Son of God, as one who shares in your mystical Supper. I will not tell your mystery to your enemies, nor give you a kiss as Judas did, but like the thief I confess you: Remember me, Lord, in your kingdom.

After Communion

Glory to you, O God.×3

Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace, as you promised, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all peoples: a light of revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.

Prayers to the Theotokos

The Mother of God is the first of the saints, and Orthodox Christians ask her prayers every day.

Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos

Rejoice, Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you gave birth to the Saviour of our souls.

It is truly right

It is truly right to call you blessed, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and all-blameless, and Mother of our God. More honoured than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify you.

To you, our Champion and Leader

The hymn that opens the Akathist, sung at the Salutations to the Theotokos on the Fridays of Great Lent.

To you, our Champion and Leader, I, your City, rescued from terrors, offer the songs of victory and thanksgiving, O Theotokos. And since your might cannot be overcome, set me free from every kind of danger, so that I may cry to you: Rejoice, O Bride unwedded!

For the Sick

Pray for anyone who is ill, using their baptismal name. Also ask your priest to remember them at the Liturgy, and about the sacrament of Holy Unction.

A short prayer for someone who is ill

#

Repeat it slowly, as many times as you like. For a woman, say “τὴν δούλην σου”.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on your servant (name).

To the Holy Unmercenaries

The Unmercenaries, like Sts. Cosmas and Damian and St. Panteleimon, were doctors who healed without taking payment.

Holy Unmercenaries and wonderworkers, visit our sicknesses. Freely you received, freely give to us.

For the Departed

The Church never stops praying for those who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Use their baptismal name.

With the saints give rest

With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the souls of your servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but life without end.

God of spirits and of all flesh

For a woman, say “τῆς κεκοιμημένης δούλης σου” and “παρ’ αὐτῆς”.

God of spirits and of all flesh, who trampled down death, overthrew the devil and gave life to your world: give rest, Lord, to the soul of your servant (name), who has fallen asleep, in a place of light, a place of green pasture, a place of refreshment, from which all pain, sorrow and sighing have fled. As a good God who loves mankind, forgive every sin they committed in word, deed or thought, for there is no one who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin, your righteousness is righteousness forever, and your word is truth. For you are the resurrection, the life and the rest of your servant (name), who has fallen asleep, Christ our God, and to you we give glory, with your Father who is without beginning, and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Memory eternal!×3

Prayers for Every Day

Short prayers to carry through the day, and the Creed, the confession of the faith said at every Liturgy.

The Jesus Prayer

Said slowly and often, on the way to work, while waiting, or with a prayer rope. It can be shortened to “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

The Creed

Agreed at the First and Second Ecumenical Councils, in Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381).

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages: light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father, through whom all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man.

He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried.

And he rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets.

In one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.

The Prayer of St. Ephrem the Syrian

The prayer of Great Lent, said with prostrations at the weekday services of the Fast.

Lord and Master of my life, do not give me a spirit of idleness, meddling, love of power and idle talk.

But give to me, your servant, a spirit of self-control, humility, patience and love.

Yes, Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not to judge my brother, for you are blessed to the ages of ages. Amen.

About these prayers

The Greek follows the Church’s own service books: the Horologion, the Small Euchologion and the Divine Liturgy. The English is translated from the Greek by The Eastern Cross, kept close to the original and in plain modern English so the prayers are easy to pray aloud.

Use these as a starting point for a daily rule of prayer, alongside your parish prayer book and your priest’s guidance. If you are new to praying this way, start small: the Trisagion Prayers in the morning and evening, and the Jesus Prayer during the day. Our guide on how to pray explains more.

Spot a mistake in the Greek or the English? Tell us in the Discord and we’ll fix it.
