The Panikhida is the short service of prayer for the departed, served on the anniversaries of a death, on the Saturdays of the dead and whenever the family asks. It ends with “Memory eternal.”

It is short enough to pray at home as well.

About this edition

From the Service Book of the Holy Orthodox-Catholic Apostolic (Greco-Russian) Church, translated and arranged by Isabel Florence Hapgood (Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1906). Our text was made from scans of the printed book and checked against three separate scans; if you spot a mistake, tell us in the server.

This translation is in the public domain. We took the text from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library and left out the editors’ footnotes.

Books help, but they don’t replace the life of the Church. If something here raises a question, bring it to your priest. No parish yet? Find one near you.
