The Way of a Pilgrim
A poor Russian wanderer hears in church that we should “pray without ceasing” and cannot stop wondering how. He walks from place to place asking, until an elder teaches him the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Then he sets off across Russia with a knapsack, a Bible and the Philokalia, and tells us what he learns and whom he meets.
For many people it is the first Orthodox book they ever read. It is simple, warm and hard to put down.

About this edition
Translated from the Russian by R. M. French (London: Philip Allan, 1930). The sequel, The Pilgrim Continues His Way, is a later translation and is not included.
This translation is in the public domain. We took the text from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library and left out the editors’ footnotes.
Books help, but they don’t replace the life of the Church. If something here raises a question, bring it to your priest. No parish yet? Find one near you.
