Council of Chalcedon

451

In 451 more than five hundred bishops met at Chalcedon, across the Bosporus from Constantinople, at the shrine of St. Euphemia. The council confessed that Christ is one person in two natures, fully God and fully human, “without confusion, without change, without division, without separation.” Pope Leo’s Tome was read and the bishops cried, “Peter has spoken through Leo.” The council also confirmed Constantinople’s place of honour next to Rome. Ancient Chalcedon is today Kadıköy, a district of Istanbul.
