Ecumenical Council
First Council of Constantinople
In 381 the emperor Theodosius called the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople. The Arian struggle had raised a new question, whether the Holy Spirit is truly God, and the council confessed Him as “the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified.” That completed the Creed. St. Gregory the Theologian presided for a time, and St. Gregory of Nyssa was one of its leading voices. It met in the church of Hagia Irene, which still stands.
