St. Theodora the Empress
Theodora was married to the iconoclast emperor Theophilos but secretly venerated icons, keeping them hidden in a chest. When he died in 842 she became regent for her son and, with Patriarch Methodios, called a council that restored the icons. On the first Sunday of Lent in 843 a great procession carried icons back into Hagia Sophia, which the Church still celebrates as the Triumph of Orthodoxy.
