Third Council of Constantinople

680–681

In 680–681 the Sixth Ecumenical Council met in a domed hall, the Trullo, of the imperial palace in Constantinople. For decades the emperors had pushed the idea that Christ had only one will. The council confessed that Christ has two wills, divine and human, and that His human will freely follows His divine will, exactly as St. Maximus the Confessor had taught and suffered for. The ruins of the Great Palace lie beside the Hippodrome in Istanbul.
