St. John Chrysostom

c. 347–407 · Constantinople · Feast November 13

John was a famous preacher in Antioch, and the Church gave him the name Chrysostom, “golden-mouthed.” In 398 he was made Archbishop of Constantinople against his will. He cut his own household spending to feed the poor, and he preached so sharply against the luxury of the court that the empress Eudoxia had him exiled twice. He died on the road to a distant exile in 407, saying, “Glory to God for all things.” We serve his Divine Liturgy most Sundays, and his Paschal sermon is read every Easter night.
