Patriarchate of Alexandria

1st century

St. Mark the Evangelist founded the Church of Alexandria, and its theological school gave the world St. Athanasius and St. Cyril. After Chalcedon most Egyptians followed the Coptic Church, and the Greek Orthodox patriarchate stayed small for centuries. In the last hundred years it has grown again through missions in Kenya, Uganda, Congo and across Africa, and today it is the Church of the whole continent. Its cathedral of the Annunciation stands in Alexandria.
