St. Menas the Wonderworker

died c. 309 · Abu Mena, Egypt · Feast November 11

Menas was an Egyptian serving in the Roman army in Phrygia. When the persecution began he went into the mountains to pray, then walked into the arena during a festival and declared himself a Christian. He was beheaded. His body was brought back to Egypt, and at his tomb near Alexandria a great pilgrimage city grew up, Abu Mena, whose small clay flasks of holy oil have been found all over the Mediterranean. He is honoured as a finder of lost things.
