St. Cyril of Alexandria

c. 376–444 · Alexandria · Feast June 9

Cyril succeeded his uncle as Patriarch of Alexandria in 412. When Nestorius of Constantinople denied that the Virgin Mary is Theotokos, Cyril wrote letters and twelve anathemas showing that the One born of Mary is the eternal Word of God made flesh. He led the Council of Ephesus in 431, which confirmed his teaching. His writings on Christ shaped the Church’s faith for centuries.
