Stefan Nemanja was the Grand Župan of Serbia, who united the Serbian lands and built Studenica Monastery. In 1196 he gave up the throne, became the monk Simeon, and went to Mount Athos to join his son Sava. Together they founded Hilandar in 1198. He reposed there the next year, and fragrant myrrh began to flow from his relics, which Sava later brought home to Studenica.
