Church of the Holy Sepulchre

335

St. Constantine and his mother St. Helena built the Church of the Resurrection in 335 over Golgotha and the tomb of Christ, after Helena found the True Cross nearby. It has been burned, wrecked and rebuilt many times, and today several churches share it under ancient agreements. Every Holy Saturday the Patriarch of Jerusalem enters the tomb, and the Holy Fire comes forth and is passed from candle to candle through the crowd and flown to Orthodox countries around the world.
