St. Gregory the Dialogist
Gregory was prefect of Rome before he gave his family palace to be a monastery and became a monk. Elected Pope in 590, he fed the city through plague and famine, sent missionaries to England, and called himself “servant of the servants of God.” His Dialogues, stories of the saints of Italy, gave him his Eastern name. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, served on Lenten weekdays, is attributed to him.
