St. Lawrence of Rome
Lawrence was archdeacon of Rome under Pope Sixtus II. When the prefect demanded the Church’s treasures, Lawrence asked for three days, gave the Church’s money to the poor, and returned with crowds of the sick and needy: “These are the treasures of the Church.” He was roasted on a gridiron, and he told his torturers, “Turn me over, this side is done.”
