St. Sebastian of Rome

died 288 · Rome · Feast December 18

Sebastian was an officer in the guard of the emperor Diocletian who secretly encouraged Christians in prison. When he was discovered he was tied to a tree and shot with arrows and left for dead. A Christian widow nursed him back to health, and he went to the emperor again to rebuke him. This time he was beaten to death.
